    In May 2009, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas prepared to meet newly elected U.S. President Barack Obama, confident that the new administration, its public professions to the contrary, had already tilted in the Palestinians' direction and against Israel. Abbas had recently spurned former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's offer of an independent Palestinian state comprising all of the West Bank, including land swaps, with a capital in East Jerusalem.
